High-Quality Free Windows Software
Every time I try to find a free (whether it's freeware or Open-Source) Windows program, what I end up finding is link after link to time-limited shareware, or commercial sites. It's so hard to find truly free Windows software (software that you can use forever without paying for it, other than perhaps voluntary donations to the author) online, because generally the authors don't want to spend resources promoting it (or rigging pages to get better search engine results etc).
So this page is my list of software that I consider to be useful, free Windows software. It's not complete, but I'll add to it as I find stuff. If you know of (or have written) something you think should be here, send me an email (the little envelope at the bottom of the page).
I'm not going to list every piece of free software - just ones that I consider "significant". Hard to define, of course, but generally software where there are many commercial versions available but a free alternative exists.
- Spammunition. Awesome program - it's uses a Bayesian algorithm to categorize email in Outlook as Spam and automatically moves the spam into a folder of your choosing.
- AVG. This is a virus checker that's free for noncommercial use. I like companies that offer free stuff to home users and make their money off corporations that can generally afford to pay more for software.
- eEmule. This is a peer to peer file sharing client, like the commercial eDonkey and similar to Gnutella (unlike Napster which used a central server). You're on your own when it comes to finding servers to connect to, but that's what keeps it relatively safe from being "shut down".
- PuTTY. A free SSH client for Windows (submitted by John Burton).
- Avant Browser. This is an excellent "wrapper" for Internet Explorer that adds tabbed browsing, skins, and quite a lot of other nice functionality. It's got a search box built in (which makes up for the limitation in other similar programs, since the Google toolbar no longer works), and a popup blocker. It's become my main browser.
That's it for now.. any more?
